Dubnyk backstops Oilers to 3-2 shootout win over Wings

After taking an early 2-0 lead and staving off the Red Wings through the majority of the game, the Oilers seemed destined for a 2-1 win — rookie goalie Devan Dubnyk’s first — Friday night. But with less than one second left in regulation, Detroit’s Brian Rafalski scored to shatter the dream and force extra time.

Thankfully, Dubnyk knew how to put it back together: with two saves in overtime and two in a shootout, the Alberta native got the monkey off his back and earned the first ‘W’ of his NHL career.

Andrew Cogliano and Ryan Whitney scored Edmonton’s two goals, whileGilbert Brule assisted on both plays and was credited with the shootout game-winner.

Calgary minor hockey ranks churning out next generation of stingy netminding standouts

The next wave of great Calgary goaltenders has been trying to out-do each other for years.

There’s a good chance that battle could continue deep into the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Spokane Chiefs ‘tender James Reid, Saskatoon Blades star Steven Stanford and Brandon Wheat Kings puck-stopper Jacob DeSerres have been frustrating WHL snipers all season.

But it’s nothing new to them. They’ve been going head-to-head since early in their minor hockey years.

“We played against each other right from novice,” Reid said.

“There was always tons of competition. That definitely helped out in the long run.”

DeSerres, whose Wheat Kings will host this spring’s Memorial Cup tournament, said the group remains close…

….”And the goaltending schools in Calgary definitely helped.”
